Lunch and Learn: Estate Planning Basics for Families with Young Kids

  • WeWork Pasadena 177 East Colorado Boulevard Pasadena, CA, 91101 United States (map)

Who will California law allow to care for your children when you cannot? How will you manage your finances or your healthcare if you are unable to make decisions for yourself? How can you make your wishes known in advance?

On Tuesday, May 8th at 12:00 pm, Wood Legal Group, LLP will host a presentation by founding attorney Portia M. Wood, to explain why everyone needs an estate plan.

Proper estate planning ensures that the way you want yourself, your family, your assets, and even your pets cared for is recognized and respected when you are unable to do it yourself. An estate plan is a group of documents setting forth your instructions for how to manage your assets, your medical care, your minor children or special-needs members of your family, and your pets, if you are mentally or physically incapacitated. Your plan can also specify the distribution of your assets when you are no longer here.

Legal planning is particularly important for people with minor children and unmarried couples who are living together. The program will review each part of the estate plan, and why you need it. Topics include wills, trusts, special needs trusts, powers of attorney, advance directives, health care proxies and living wills. Wood will also explain what happens when there is no will, and why fill-in-the-blank estate planning forms found online are generally inadequate to achieve your objectives.

Attorney Portia M. Wood is the founding partner of Wood Legal Group, LLP, a law firm whose core practice area is estate planning.
